Farinha – Coogee

How’s this for a cross-cultural fusion? Italian food, made from Brazilian ingredients, served up tapas-style in an industrial-looking space in the Eastern Suburbs. It seems Coogee is no longer just the haunt of backpackers and beach bums but the destination of an increasing number of up and coming eateries. The latest addition to the Coogee Bay Road invasion of gourmet coffee houses and frozen yoghurt shops is Farinha, opened in November 2012.

Daters should arrive early to secure a good spot at one of the long wooden tables, or if you’re upping the romance, there are a few solo spaces to tuck yourselves away in. There’s no ordering here (for one flat price you pick from the endless selection being served to all) so you won’t have to mull over a menu or be polite about sharing a dish that you wouldn’t necessarily have chosen.

Arrive hungry as the continual service means you won’t be waiting long, and pace yourself to avoid peeking too early. The drill here is to simply sit and marvel as each dish is bought round, directly from the chef’s open kitchen downstairs – complete with wood fired oven and lots of Italian hand gesturing. Slices of pizza, bowls of pasta and platters of cured meats circulate the tables and you can request specific dishes if you haven’t seen them go by.

The arrival of the different offerings gives ample opportunity for conversation and will help break the ice on any first date nerves. On arrival you can watch the chefs popping pizzas into the oven and cooking their dishes over open flames, using fresh pasta made each day on site. Things can get pretty buzzy in this place so if you’re looking for quiet sophistication, you’ll want to look elsewhere. However Farinha could be just what you’re looking for if you’re keen for something different to satisfy stomachs, provide perfect first date small talk or offer somewhere that little bit livelier to meet friends for dinner.

If you’ve still got space to fill after the savoury stuff, try one of their strawberry and nutella calzones. Alternatively, you can wave goodbye to the merry gang in the kitchen and head down to watch the waves and look at the stars with an ice cream.

DNA Loves:

- the graffiti style murals on the walls and the urban industrial design
- chorizo, tomato pasta with pecorino cheese – perfect with a glass of red
- fresh pasta made daily on site and dough tossed by hand in the kitchen
